Public Information Officer (PI)
What does Public Information Officer do?
Public Information in AA means carrying the AA message of recovery to the general public and professionals. This includes giving talks to doctors, nurses, social services, police, magistrates, community groups, business groups, schools, colleges and trade and professional unions and associations. Open and public meetings, exhibitions, displays, posters, newspapers, magazines, radio and television also come under the heading of PI.
How to achieve this:
Establish a local PI Committee
Co-operate with Professionals who work with the still suffering alcoholic and invite to our ‘Open’ meetings
Contact schools, universities, councils and workplaces to arrange presentations and open meeting workshops
Create positive relationships with print and digital media
Requirements: 2 Years continues sobriety and good service history. Strong Fellowship connections
Armed Forces Liaison Officer (AFLO)
What does Armed Forces Liaison Officer do?
The role of the ASLO is to establish and maintain communication between Alcoholics Anonymous and The Royal Navy, The Army and The Royal Air Force and to report back at all levels within intergroup or region. It is also important to cultivate similar contact and communication with Community Welfare Officers and organisations such as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and Veterans-UK.
What does it mean in practice?
Making initial contact with service establishments
Meeting an armed service professional
Conducting an AA Presentation
Co-operating with the Armed Services

Young Persons Liaison Officer (YPLO)
What does Young Person Liaison Officer do?
YPLOs carry AA’s message to organizations that encounter young alcoholics. A Young Person in AA is ‘someone who came into AA at the age of 30 or younger, and so will have experience of getting sober at a young age, the better to relate to the particular problems faced by young people seeking to live sober…YPLOs will work closely with other service officers, in particular those in Public Information,’ to help carry the message of recovery to young alcoholics.
5 primary functions YPLO have are:
Offering guidance to young people newly in AA
Encouraging and supporting young members of AA into service and to develop their service
Ensuring that the voice of young people in AA is heard at all levels of the service structure
Carrying the AA message to young people outside AA who have not yet had their chance to recover
Supporting other members of AA in carrying the message outside AA by providing them with young AAs to give talks and attend presentations
Requirements: 2 Years continues sobriety and good service history
Intergroup SHARE Liaison Officer (ISLO)
What is Share Magazine?
Share magazine is produced and published monthly by the GSB. It is written by members for members, and its primary purpose is to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous in print. There are many AA members who find it difficult to get to a meeting, such as the housebound, those in the armed services, on oil rigs, in prisons or hospitals. There are lots more who rely on our magazine as a supplement between meetings, or instead of one.
What does Intergroup Share Liaison Officer do?
Provides essential contact between members, groups and their region
Informs the Fellowship via the groups that the magazine exists
visits groups in the intergroup area
provides subscription forms and helps to set up a subscription
is invited to attend an annual Share workshop
may attend conventions or other AA gatherings to raise awareness
encourages the sale of the magazine and
seeks contributions of articles, photos and cartoons from members
